Week 8 discussion 1
I learned a lot of helpful things while watching videos 7.1, 7.2, 8.1 and 8.2. While watching 7.1, I learned about the different types of supporting materials that you can use. The supporting materials that you should use are narratives, definitions, testimony, facts and statistics, and examples. In 7.2, Evan taught me that books are the best kind of media sources to use because they are written by many, edited, and take a long time to write. In video 8.1, Anthony taught me how to correctly organize a speech. There are seven basic patterns and they are called chronological, spatial, topical, narrative, cause-and-effect, problem-solution, and Monroe's motivated sequence. He also taught me what each outline was used for. In 8.2, I learned about the different types of transitions that you can use to make your speech effective. There are six types of transitions and they are ordering, reinforcing, contrasting, chronology, casuality, and summarizing. The video also taught me example phrases that are used in each type of transition so I know how to use each transition correctly.

For everyone to watch these videos, they will find many tips to help make their speech stronger. The types of supporting materials that can be used is very resourceful and will come in handy for us. I'm glad they broke it down to the simplest way when describing them so I could get a better understanding. I agree with what you said about books being the best kind of media sources to use. Many of us turn to internet most of the time, but books are strongly reliable because they have to go through a long time of editing, be looked over, and finally published. The different types of transitions given are very helpful. I'm glad to know what other words can be used when transitioning from one point to another so that it flows together.
ReplyDeleteHello Colie!
ReplyDeleteI learned the same things that you & Kai have got out from the videos. I think the video did a good job of showing examples of each type of transition. Those examples show the many choices you can transition from one point to another, which are very useful in organizing the speech as well. The outline is the most important part in starting off a speech, so the different patterns of organization plays a big role in how everything is sorted out throughout the speech. I liked how you brought up that books are the most reliable in giving out information. Unlike internet sources, books have a longer process in publishing because everything should be correct, hopefully! haha
Hey Colie!
ReplyDeleteI thought about the videos the same way. It breaks everything down to a simpler explanation. Whereas the book drags on about it sometimes. It makes me confused, because it has so much extra stuff that they explain there.
Good thing the videos gave samples of transitions and also explained about the patter organization a little bit more.
As for the books, it's usually the number one source, but most people are lazy to go to the library.
The internet is so much easier, but of course the internet has a whole lot of constant editting [wikipedia] so we never really know what to believe.
Hi Colie! It looks like you learned a lot from the videos this week - awesome! How are you going to organize the coming speech? Also, what types of supporting materials are you going to be including in the coming speech? :)
ReplyDeleteI also learned a lot of helpful things in videos from chapter 7 and 8. The video helps with choosing the best supporting materials. They also discuss media credibility, which is very important when choosing the media that best supports your speech. I found it helpful when Anthony discussed the patterns of organization. I learned that there are 7 patterns of organization. I agree that different types of transitions given are helpful. The video was useful providing 6 transitions we should know. All four videos provided a lot of useful information that will be a great asset to our speeches.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching these videos from chapter seven and eight I found some interesting and useful information just as you have. I found the information about the sources and picking the right ones very useful. I thought it was very interesting to find that books were the best sources to use. You would think with all the internet use in the world that you could find more credible information that way but as stated in the video books still remain the most credible and reliable sources. I also agree that the different types of transitions are helpful and I will definitely try to be more cautious of my transitions when writing my speech and outline. All the videos were very useful and I thought you had very good insight about them.
