Week 8 Discussion 2

You tend to find facts most effective in a speech when you are trying to persuade others to do something. However, sometimes people over do the amount of facts that they use and the audience begins to "tune out" which makes the facts not effective. Statistics are used to "quantify the magnitude of a problem and make comparisons across groups and time periods." Having too many statistics also overwhelms an audience and makes them not effective. Also, if you include too many, you can be misinterpreted. In order for your facts and statistics to be effective, they must be from reliable sources and you must keep your audience in mind when you plan on using them.

  1. I agree that facts and statistics are a great way to persuade an audience because it is very effective when the information and numbers are dramatic. I also agree that too many statistics are overwhelming for an audience. I believe some speakers, like the one on our speech buddy videos who discussed about alcohol, used too many statistics. I admit that his use of the graph and dramatic percentages were some what persuasive, however, I felt like all the information was just thrown at me. Statistics from reliable sources can also be difficult to find because statistics can change over time. Good job Colie :)

  2. Hey.
I think that having facts and statistics in any speech is a good attention getter for the audience. I have to agree with piper with that it is most effective when the numbers are dramatic. I agree with you that a person shouldn’t use it too much in their speech but it seems like your saying facts and statistics are a bad thing. Well I guess we think differently on that part. I think facts and statistics are a great way to keep your audience focused because it gives them information that they didn’t know about your topic before. I just think that it helps with any speech in giving the audience some sort of picture in their head of how it compares to what the rest of the world thinks.

  3. I AGREE!!!

yes, i also said facts and statistics are very useful in a persuasive speech. i believe this is true because in a persuasive speech, your main goal is to convince the audience that your topic is right and effective. also, your right about having too much facts and statisitcs is a bad thing. having too much can hurt you more than help because as you said, it can be misinterpreted. i also think that any speech with facts and statistics are never a bad thing. it can never hurt to have some truth.

  4. Hey! I also think that the audience will "toon out" if one were to keep giving facts after facts after statistic. It would get boring after a while. That is why I think that people should just give enough facts and statistics to get their point across. I also think that if one uses so many numbers in their speech they will one way or another become confused. I mean, I'd think that I'd get really confused if I had to memorize tons of numbers. And yes, the facts and statistics should really come from credible sources; afterall, we would not want to give the audience mocked up information.
