Week 9 Discussion 1

In video 9.1, I learned how to make a good introduction. There are three things that you need to do while giving your introduction. They are to get the audience's attention, establish the purpose and thesis, and preview your main points. From this video I learned how to write a successful attention getter. You can use stories, humor, or even surprising facts and statistics. In video 9.2, I learned how to write a successful conclusion. You must review your main points, state the reinforcement of purpose, and provide closure. I have always had problems writing conclusions so I found the tips on what to include in a conclusion very helpful. By Watching video 13.1A, I noticed that although Evan had notecards, he did speak loud and clear, and he also had good eye contact. In Video 13.1B, Jeanine seemed very confident. She had good eye contact (looked all over the room and didn't use notecards) and it looked like she had done the speech a few times. I also liked her attention getter. In the Use It video, I think that Katherine talked too fast. I also think that she used her notecards way too much and she didn't seem confident at all.

  1. I found the Chapter 9 videos to be very helpful this time. It helps that the speech buddies told you clearly that introduction and conclusion are very important out of the speech. I agree that you have to make a good introduction so you keep your audience's attention. I like the examples they gave for the attention getter so I know what ways I can present my attention getter next time. I have problems writing conclusions too! Evan did use notecards and had good eye contact at times, but I felt he looked to his notecards too many times. Jeanine was VERY confident and she sets a great example of how we should present our speech.

  2. I agree I think the whole sections on introductions and conclusions of an informative speech were very useful. I think that especially because last time that we gave our speeches a lot of people forgot to go over the main points aging and end with closure. A good introduction is the best way to keep the audience attention, but a lot of the time I also think if people aren’t that interested in your topic they aren’t going to pay as much attention either. I also I think I looked at my note cards a lot, it’s because it’s so tempting to have them in front and not look at them.

  3. Hey colie,
I found the tips about the what to include in an introduction helpful as well. I think using humor or interesting story will really get the audiences attention and make them really want to listen to your speech. I also found the tips for writing conclusions very helpful as well. I too have trouble writing a conclusion. I will use these tips too. I wish I could do my whole speech without notecards as seen in the video, but the notecards are also helpful tool when forgetting a point. they can be either negavite or positve a guess...
