Week 12, Discussion 2
One concept that I learned from chapter 11 was the different kinds of presentation media and design tips for digital slides. There are different types of presentation media, such as overhead transparencies, flip charts, white boards and chalkboards, document cameras, video, handouts, models, and sound recordings. There is also computer technology such as digital slides. Chapter 11 taught me digital slide design tips. The tips include limiting the number of words for each bullet point, making the font large and clean, avoid relying on text or numbers, choose transitions that fit the tone of your topic and visual material, and avoid special effects. The design tip that I found most helpful was to avoid special effects. I usually use these in my presentations because I have always thought they added "a little something" and it made it look like I actually spent time putting together my PowerPoint. However, now that I know that audiences see these effects as annoying and distracting, I will refrain from using them in the future.

Hello Colie!
ReplyDeleteI as well have learned the different kinds of presentation media & design tips for digital slides. It is very important to know what makes digital slides effective in a speech. I'm glad you have noticed that the wording in a slide should be limited, that the font should be visible, & that people should avoid special effects & such because it can distract the audience. I have noticed that myself just by observing people during speeches & most people tend to make their powerpoint fancy, which can take away from the presentation. It is a good thing you have took that tip into consideration because I had thought the same thoughts you had about special effects. Most of the time keeping things simple works best in any situation.

Hey Colie!
ReplyDeleteI found in chapter eleven that limiting the number of words to each bulletin helpful as well. Otherwise the audience spends too much time reading your slides, and less time listening to you speak. The tip on using clean and large text is always a good one to remember because it keeps the slides from being distracting, or from not being understood. I found the tip about avoiding special affects the most helpful as well. I also thought similar to you, that the special affects added to the presentation, not take away from it. It also thought it helped the presentation look like I had spent more time on it than I had, but I guess not. And I am not going to use them as well.
You bring up really good points from chapter 11. I did not know there were so many different types of presentation media. For powerpoint presentations I was always taught to keep and clean and simple, so that the audience can get the message in a clear way. It is funny that you brought up the distracting transitions because I thought that other students were taught to keep presentations simple unless the crazy transitions have a purpose like you said. I think that it is important to have a “little something” only I it enhances the message and helps the audience understand better, but if not then I do no think it is needed.
